As I (Karen) sat in our little couch next to the radiator, I heard the water draining out and I thought to myself, "Yeah, this must mean warmer weather is on it's way." We had no heat for two days and did just fine, but then I heard the water trickling back into the pipes and I touched the pipes, I felt warmth again. This is life in China, unpredictable:) One day heat, the next day... none. One day internet... the next day... none. Sometimes there are days when we have no water (but this has only been for a short time), as well as no hot water for showers (usually due to not have our little water heater plugged in properly). Life here is unpredictable and has taught us a new level of patience. We rarely panic anymore when we "surge" out our apartment due to overwhelming it's electrical limit and we have found that whatever the problem is, it usually gets resolved and we are soon back to having a flushing toilet and heat.

Speaking of "unpredictability" we had rain last night. This is probably only the second or third time we have seen it rain since we moved here ten months ago. I was thrilled because the rain was refreshing and I knew it would help give "new life" to the dry, dusty ground around us. And then.... we woke up to something even more beautiful this morning.... SNOW! Snow is pretty uncommon for Beijing, as well, and since we have been here, we have only seen it two other times. The locals living within our campus were delighted with the snow this morning. Many people were out capturing photos of the fresh white blanket that was covering RUC, little children were shoveling the snow and throwing snowballs, and the older folks were out for a walk observing the beauty around them.

Yes, I do ache for the warmer weather to grace Beijing, but the rain and snow will help bring new life to this dry city and it was a pleasure to see the extra joy it brought to our community.

Our organization had it's annual conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was such a wonderful time for us all. It was exactly what each one of needed to go into the 2nd half of the school year. We got to do a couple extra fun things as well. Good times!

Our family, another family, and three students went to a ski area last week. It was an hour bus ride and the snow was man made. We had a really fun day. It was perfect weather, too. Kenz and Caleb did a lot of instructing throughout the day. That was cool to watch. The cost was the most amazing. 65 RMB for the bus ride, lift ticket, and rentals. Thats about $10!

This is the crowd to get an iPhone 4s at one of the four Apple stores in China. The crowd started at 6pm for a next day 7am release. There are so many police officers. Completely crazy.

Our first semester is over and some of our friends took us out for Hotpot. It was a terrific evening eating, laughing, and just hanging out! We tried a few new things (nothing crazy) and ate until we were all stuffed.

What Fun! Some friends invited us to accompany them to the student dorms for trick or treating. (Usually we wouldn't be allowed to be in there) The students were waiting for the kids and everyone had a ball. I'm not sure who enjoyed it more, the kids or the College students. Since the students knew we were coming they stocked up on their candy. Now, trick or treating is not part of the culture here so the students off- loaded all their candy on the 11 kids in our group. The students were so generous! Some kids gave full snickers bars, others gave whole containers of chips, and of course there were lollipops and an assortment of other goodies. Caleb was Bruce Lee (Lee Shao Long) and the students absolutely loved it, and Kenzie was a princess. They loved her costume as well. We really thought that not being in the States would mean that the kids wouldn't have much of a Halloween. The truth is that they loved every second of it. Actually, this was the easiest Halloween we've ever had, yet still tons of fun.
